![Mahanoy City Watch Fob Back Closeup.JPG - MAHANOY CITY OLD HOME WEEK WATCH FOB - Brass medallion/watch fob, 1 5/8 in. dia., front is marked with image of old miner named Manny, number 50 and various embossed images of a shack, coal breaker and mining scene, back marked SEMI-CENTENNIAL, SEPT 1-6, MAHANOY CITY OLD HOME WEEK 1863-1913 in embossed letters and makers mark, with old leather strap and buckle [Mahanoy City is a old mining town located 13 miles southwest of Hazleton, in northern Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania in the southern coal region. Mahanoy City, originally a part of Mahanoy township, was settled in 1859 and incorporated as a borough by decree of the Court of Quarter Sessions of Schuylkill County on December 16, 1863. The borough was a major center of anthracite production and was served by a branch of the Lehigh Valley railway. Labor Day 1913 marked the opening of the old home week celebration in commemoration of the semi-centennial anniversary of the borough of Mahanoy City, PA. The parade included thousands of miners in the largest celebration ever held in the city. The parade was under the auspices of the United Mine Workers and special guest vice president John Strambo of the UMWA Region 9. The front of the fob shows images of Emanuel ‘Manny’ Boyer, the first permanent resident of Mahanoy City, and his original shack built on the townsite. It’s interesting to note that the Sept. 6, 1913 edition of Coal Age noted that the retail market for anthracite coal was being impacted by old home week in Mahanoy City since the supply of coal was substantially curtailed during this time since many of the collieries in the town’s vicinity suspended work so the miners could take part in the festivities.]](Mahanoy City Watch Fob Back Closeup.JPG) |
